Important accommodation update for 2022 entry

As the start of the new academic year approaches, we are providing an update on student accommodation in Glasgow.

This year we have experienced an unprecedented number of applications for University accommodation.

Although the University has significantly increased bedspaces for the new academic year, with no significant additional capacity in the city, demand for accommodation continues to substantially exceed availability.

We regret that we are no longer able to provide guaranteed accommodation for anyone who has not already received confirmation of University Accommodation. We are also highlighting that the city has limited private let or private sector purpose-built accommodation available.

If you have not yet made your accommodation arrangements, we strongly advise that you do not complete registration and enrolment or travel to Glasgow until you have secured your accommodation.

How do I find out about other Accommodation in the City?

Please be aware that there has been no significant addition to student accommodation capacity in the city and demand continues to exceed supply. Should you want to continue your search, you may find the following resources helpful:
·         The Students’ Representative Council (SRC) Advice Centre have compiled some advice and top tips on how to get started with your flat hunt.
·         You can also download their Fearless Flat Hunting guide which includes a useful checklist of everything you should be aware of before signing a lease, should you find somewhere suitable.

My accommodation options are now more expensive, is support available?

Last updated: Mon Aug 15 10:05

Whilst there is not specific financial support available for this purpose, there are various sources of financial aid that you may be eligible to apply for.

Can I start online and move to Glasgow later in the year?

Last updated: Wed Aug 10 12:08

The University is not offering remote study during academic year 2022/23 in the majority of its degree programmes and there is a latest arrival date for each programme by which you need to be on campus to fully begin your studies.
Therefore, once you have secured accommodation in Glasgow, you need to register, enrol and commence your programme on campus, as per your programme's published dates. Please ensure you have secured accommodation prior to completing registration and enrolment, and then make travel arrangements to Glasgow.
DO NOT travel and arrive in Glasgow without first securing accommodation. Please refer to the published  important dates for new undergraduates, or for new postgraduates. Please note that although some courses will have online elements as part of an on-campus programme the programmes as a whole will not be taught remotely which is why we cannot offer remote study while you try to find accommodation.

Will my tuition fee be refunded if I complete registration and then can't find anywhere to live?

Last updated: Wed Aug 10 12:08

Please do not complete registration and enrolment if you have not already secured accommodation.

I've arrived and have nowhere to live. What can I do/how can you help me?

Last updated: Thu Sep 8 19:09

If you are struggling to find somewhere the Students' Representative Council Advice Centre can offer help and advice to all new and returning students. They are located in the McIntyre Building (next to the Main Gate). Full contact details for the centre can be found online

What should I do if I want to complain?

Last updated: Wed Aug 10 8:48

If you have explored all your options and wish to complain to the University, you may do so.
You can find out about the
complaints process here. Please note that in the event a complaint is upheld, it is unlikely to result in an offer of accommodation due to the lack of residential capacity in the city of Glasgow already highlighted.

I have already received and accepted an offer of accommodation - is this secure?

Last updated: Wed Aug 10 12:45

If you have already received and accepted an offer of accommodation, please be assured your accommodation is secure.

How could this happen as I was guaranteed a place?

Last updated: Wed Aug 10 8:51

The University has significantly increased its own bedspaces for the new academic year, however with no significant addition to capacity across the city, demand for accommodation citywide continues to substantially exceed availability. In addition, we have experienced an unprecedented number of applications for University accommodation this year. The scale of the increase was not known at the time our accommodation policy was written, and the guarantee was offered. We acted as soon as the situation became apparent and we're working hard to provide clear information, advice, and guidance on your options.

I am a Postgraduate Research student, what should I do?

Last updated: Thu Aug 18 12:45

PGRs are encouraged to secure accommodation in advance of travelling to Glasgow. If you are unable to do so, or are concerned about your ability to engage in your research in person from the start of your PhD, please contact your Graduate School or PGR Administrator.
The Graduate School/PGR Administrator team will offer advice regarding the commencement of your studies, based on your personal circumstances and the nature of your research.

I must defer my place as I have no accommodation, can I defer my UofG Scholarship also?

I'm a continuing student and can't find accommodation, can I study online or pause my studies?

Last updated: Thu Sep 22 16:54

You cannot study remotely, so once you have secured accommodation in Glasgow, you need to register, enrol and commence your programme on campus, as per your programme's published dates. If as a last resort you are considering pausing your studies, do not complete registration, but speak to your adviser of studies/school contact.

I haven't got any accommodation yet should I complete registration and enrolment?

Last updated: Wed Aug 10 12:07

Please do not complete registration and enrolment if you have not already secured accommodation.

Can the costs I've incurred be reimbursed?

Last updated: Wed Aug 10 8:47

If you applied for accommodation prior to the guarantee deadline and are unable to secure accommodation, are not able to defer, and wish to decline / withdraw your place, and have already incurred costs that cannot be reimbursed, refunded, or transferred to a later date, the University will consider making a contribution towards them. To do this, submit the enquiry form, attaching all applicable receipts, and requests will be considered on a case by case basis. We will provide further detail on this process in due course.

Is there a waiting list I can join?

Last updated: Wed Aug 10 8:49

Unfortunately there is not a waiting list for university accommodation.

I'm going to be arriving late, will I lose my accommodation?

Last updated: Wed Aug 10 12:11
