Latest Professorial Appointments

We are pleased to announce two new professorial appointments at the School of Education. Professor Simon McGrath joins us as Chair of Education (the founding chair, established in 1949). Professor Jason Arday will join us as Professor of the Sociology of Education. We look forward to welcoming Simon and Jason in January 2022.

Professor Simon McGrath

Simon McGrath is currently UNESCO Chair in International Education and Development at the University of Nottingham and Visiting Professor at Nelson Mandela University, South Africa. He works on issues of education and development, across all levels of education and considering economic, human and sustainable development issues. He has been editor of leading journals and of handbooks in international education and development, and vocational education and training. He has worked extensively as a policy and programme advisor for a range of national and international organisations.  Highlights of this work include being part of the drafting team for the current UNESCO Recommendation on Technical and Vocational Education and Training and being lead author of the Commonwealth Education Policy Framework.

'It is an immense pleasure to be joining the School of Education, University of Glasgow. I’m excited at the prospect of working with my new colleagues who are doing some incredible work. COP26 highlights this particularly in the area of education for sustainable futures, probably the most important issue we face as educationalists.'

Professor Jason Arday

Jason Arday is an Associate Professor in Sociology at Durham University in the Department of Sociology and the Deputy Executive Dean for People and Culture in the Faculty of Social Science and Health. He is a Visiting Research Fellow at The Ohio State University in the Office of Diversity and Inclusion. Jason holds Visiting Professorships at Coventry University, London Metropolitan University and Nelson Mandela University. He is a Trustee of the Runnymede Trust, the UK’s leading Race Equality Thinktank and the British Sociological Association (BSA). Jason sits on the Centre for Labour and Social Studies (CLASS) National Advisory Panel and the NHS Race and Health Observatory Academic Reference Group. Jason is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts (RSA).

'I am absolutely delighted to be joining the University of Glasgow as Professor of Sociology of Education. It is my hope to support the institution in their sector-leading interventions around social justice and race equality. Glasgow have worked diligently and purposely to actively disrupt institutional and systemic racism over the last couple of years. It is my hope that my presence can complement the fantastic work already being undertaken whilst creating opportunities for more people of colour to enter the Academy. I look forward to meeting the Glasgow community.'
