Professional Services Excellence Awards

The University believes in celebrating the contribution of our people and recognising those who go the extra mile to make a standout contribution to support each other to succeed. This can be evidenced by individuals or teams providing exceptional customer service, contributing to service innovation, and by demonstrating positive, professional behaviours that exemplify our University values of Ambition & Excellence, Curiosity & Discovery, Integrity & Truth and Inclusive Community. For 2022 we are re-launching our Professional Services Excellence Awards to celebrate outstanding activities that promote collegial behaviours which contribute to the success of the University and create a positive culture.  These awards are complementary to existing recognition processes including the Long Service Awards, Teaching Excellence Awards, Research Culture Awards and the James Watt Technician Prize.


The University is fortunate to have staff who make a significant contribution to the life and work of the University, going well beyond what is expected from them in their day to day roles. This award is intended to recognise and promote the work of those individuals and teams who go the extra mile to make the University of Glasgow a great place to work or study and make a real contribution to the University’s success. Nominees will have shown exceptional service to the University through their actions, with evidence of the ensuing benefit clearly outlined and justified in the nomination. 

Who can nominate?

Any member of staff can nominate and nominations can be for an individual or team.  Self-nomination of staff is permitted, and previous nominations may be resubmitted.

Nominations should comprise:

  • A statement and
  • (Optionally) Up to two pages of additional material which may include endorsements, event feedback, resources, webpages, or policy documents.

In framing the case please refer to what aspect of the nominee’s/team’s work is being highlighted, how they have provided exceptional service and how that exceptional service has made a difference.

Deadline for nominations

Nominations should be submitted by 20th May 2022.


Selection Process

Award winners will be announced in MyGlasgow News by August 2022.

Award recipients will receive a letter and certificate from the Chief Operating Officer detailing the reason for the award, accompanied with an electronic gift voucher up to the monetary value of £300 per person (the University will meet HMRC tax and NICs liabilities payable on such awards). Where the award is made in respect of a team, the monetary value may vary dependent upon the size of the team.

James Watt Technician Prize

About James Watt

Born in Greenock, Scotland, in 1736, James Watt was employed by the University as an instrument maker at the age of 20, providing him with lodgings and a workshop. During his employment he manufactured a range of items for the Professor of Practice of Medicine, Joseph Black, that included an organ and a perspective machine.

When presented with a model Newcomen steam engine in need of repair, Watt devised a separate condenser which would improve efficiency and permit enormous savings in fuel. Through developing this idea with industrialist Matthew Boulton, Watt is considered to be one of the key figures of the Industrial Revolution. The model Newcomen engine survives to this day and is on long-term display at The Hunterian.

In recognition of the ingenuity of James Watt, the James Watt Technician Prize is awarded annually to a technician who is judged to have introduced significant innovation within their role to the benefit of the University, its staff and students, to the advancement of research or teaching or to the benefit of wider society.  The prize take the form of a £1,000 payment and a certificate from the Principal.


All members of University staff on the Technical and Specialist Job Family and all Technical Specialists on the MPA or Research-Only Job Families (e.g. IT staff).

Award Criteria

There are 5 criteria against which an award can be considered: 

  1. Innovative contribution in support of the student experience
  2. Innovative contribution in support of the staff experience
  3. Innovative contribution to the development of learning and teaching
  4. Innovative contribution in support of world leading research outcomes
  5. Innovative contribution to the civic mission of the University.

Who Can Nominate?

The Nomination should be completed by a line manager or colleague and seconded by another member of staff. Self-nomination is not allowed.

Nomination Guidelines

The case for award should begin by describing clearly the innovative contribution of the nominee. The case should then go on to describe why the contribution is worthy of the award making reference to both the impact of the innovative contribution and the extent to which the innovative contribution goes above and beyond the expectations of their role.

The case should be supported by evidence which could, for example, include (note that this list is not exhaustive and other forms of evidence can be provided).

  • Supporting statements from those benefitting from the innovation
  • Published articles
  • Web links to relevant supporting materials
  • Other external awards received in recognition of the work
